The original short-lived trading post was built by the Plymouth Bay colonists in 1627 to trade with the Wampanoag tribe for food. The post was heavily damaged by a hurricane in 1635 and was completely abandoned no later than the 1650s. Today the site hosts a replica of the original trading post and serves as a museum for the Bourne Historical Society featuring an original 19th century Railroad Station building a replica of a 19th century Saltworks and a 20th century windmill built in the style of the 19th century. The museum largely focuses on local colonial history.
